I can still remember the glow on Susie’s face, almost 25 years ago, when she came into my office to tell me she had met the love of her life, “My Billy” ---and the excitement when she called to say she wanted to introduce Billy to Harold and me and would meet us on the beach in Ventnor! Well, perhaps the look on her face was slightly different, when after everyone met and said hello Billy sat down on one of our lounge chairs and it promptly broke! Now in all fairness to Billy, it was not a new chair, and had probably been on its last legs for a while… but for the four of us, it remained a favorite story!!
Over the past 25 years there have been lots of wonderful reminiscences with Susie and Billy, some we’ve laughed about, some we’ve cried about, but with Billy’s unique ability to “do his own thing” and remain independent, this past summer brought another “Billy story.” A neighbor and I were driving down Portland Avenue when a “guy” in a motorized scooter zoomed diagonally across Ventnor Avenue to go to the rehab center. My friend was shocked and said, “who was that crazy guy– doesn’t he know he could have been killed!” Of course, that was our very own Billy, who drove like he owned the street! Later that day I saw Billy buzzing around at the pool (Mah Jongg game of course) and took him aside. I told him what I had seen, and I promised him I wouldn’t tell Susie what he had done if he promised never to do it again. With a big grin on his face he said, OK – but don’t tell Susie, she’ll take away my driver’s license!
That is the Billy I will always remember, a big smile, a great sense of humor, and a love of life!
Billy, we wish we could be here to memorialize you in person but know that you will be loved and missed and we will be sure to bring a broken chair to the beach every summer in your memory!

Joy and Harold

I met Billy Yantis not too long after his brother, Stan, and I became friends in 9th grade at Central High. I recall Bill as a strapping young man in his late teens when I was about age 12. Their parents, Ben & Dorothy Yantis, would invite me to their home for the Jewish holidays and on trips in the Philadelphia area and my parents reciprocated during our Christian holidays, so our families got to know each other.

I felt like I watched Bill's twin daughters, Barrie & Kim, grow up through their proud Uncle Stan's stories and photos. I saw Bill again when he visited Stan here in San Francisco. Stan always kept Billy informed about our trips and how I was doing and Stan let me know how Billy was such a courageous fighter, dealing with multiple medical challenges, seemingly one right after the other.

My heartfelt condolences go out to Bill Yantis's family and friends. He will be greatly missed by them. May he rest in peace.

Bill Owen, M.D.
