Obituary for Ursula Katz

Ursula Katz was born on March 3,1926 in Berlin,Germany to Hugo and Lisa Roberg. She had a happy early childhood which was shortened by the rise to power of the Nazis in 1932. After that conditions became gradually intolerable culminated by the horror of Kristallnacht on November 8,1938. The family was amongst the last German Jews able to flee when they emigrated to Chile in June of 1939.

Life was difficult in Chile. The family did not have much money but they persevered and created a life for themselves. Hugo died in Chile but Lisa and Ursula achieved their goal of coming to America in September of 1948.

Ursula flourished in the United States. She married Robert Katz in October 1951 and her daughter Sylvia was born soon after in July 1952 followed by Steven in July 1955.

Ursula worked for many years in publishing and upon retirement enjoyed playing bridge but her greatest passion was always her family especially Sylvia Gerber (Allen) and Steven (Josette Palmisano). She lived long enough to welcome 5 grandchildren, Bryan Katz (Kristine), Daniel Katz (Margaret), Clifford Gerber (Jacqueline), Aimee Gerber and Jonathan Katz and 5 great grandchildren, Madelyn, Silas, Noah, Lillian, and Aidan. Her husband died in 2000 and tragically she was predeceased by Sylvia and granddaughter Aimee.

The last five years of her life were spent at Brandywine Assisted Living in where she enjoyed meeting new friends and the attention of her beloved family. She passed away on December 17,2021. Our “Omi” will forever be in our hearts.
