Obituary for Sonya Eunice Barrett

Barrett, Sonya (Abrams) of Atlantic City, New Jersey passed away on November 13, 2022. She was born on January 29, 1931. Her parents Louis and Mildred raised Sonya and her two brothers, Alan and Paul, in Atlantic City where she graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1948. She was affectionately known as “Sunny'' by her friends and family. She brought so much happiness to her children and grandchildren; even dressing up as a clown for her grandson’s fifth birthday. Sunny was truly a ray of sunshine to everyone she met. She married Jacob Bariss and had two sons, Stephen and David. While living in Warren, Pennsylvania she was a Sunday school teacher and danced in all of the local plays.
She soon met and married the love of her life, Orlando ``Ronnie” Ponzio. They enjoyed and lived in the inlet of Atlantic City and Miami Beach where they spent many happy days on the boardwalk and beach, raising their three children, Stephen, David, and Lisa. After Ronnie passed away, she was devastated but continued caring for her grandchildren and her mother, teaching them all of life’s joys. She was well versed in religion and world history, which she shared with her grandchildren.
Sunny soon crossed paths again with Joseph Barrett, with whom she spent her golden years. They had a shared love of music and travel in common. They explored Europe together, as well as driving through the lower 48. They married and settled in Egg Harbor Township, NJ where they resided in a beautiful home for many happy years.
Sonya is survived by her son Stephen and his wife, Marlena; her stepson, Joseph Barrett, who lovingly cared for her and his father selflessly; her beloved daughter in law, Beth Graham and her husband Doug, who were there sharing their love and caring for her. She is also survived by her five grandchildren; Johnathon, Marina, Melissa, Jonah, and Mia, and great grandchild, Genevieve Bariss, with whom she shared her love of dance. She will be missed by all of them, as she was the most amazing Gramcracker.
Sonya is predeceased by her dear son, David Bariss; brothers, Alan and Paul Abrams; her husbands, Jack Bariss, Ronnie Ponzio, and Joseph Barrett. Services will be held Friday, November 18th at 1pm at Rodef Shalom Cemetery in Egg Harbor Township, NJ. In lieu of flowers, you can make donations to local animal shelters, as Sunny loved them so.
