Obituary for Shirley Gash (Soltz)

Shirley Soltz Gash -92 of Margate, New Jersey passed away on January 25, 2021. Her last days were spent comfortably in her home with family. Although the pandemic restricted many members of the family from visiting, her daughter, Betsy was by her side throughout her final journey.

Born in Atlantic City, NJ on April 21, 1928 to Joseph and Fannie Soltz, Shirley attended the Atlantic City Public Schools and graduated from Atlantic City High School. While studying at George Washington University, she met the love of her life, Seymour. Shirley and Seymour were married in 1948 and moved to Atlantic City and then Margate, where they raised their three children. Shirley later returned to college to complete her undergraduate degree in education. She taught special education in Egg Harbor Township for six years and retired to assist in the care of her mother. Following her mother’s death, Shirley embarked on a new career in partnership with her dear friend, Barbara Levitt. They created Convention Arrangements, which coordinated supplementary conference programming in Atlantic City.

Shirley was a wonderful wife, sister, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, friend, and community member. She kept active generously contributing her time and care across the Betty Bachrach Auxiliary, Hadassah, RNS, Shirley Mae Assistance Fund, the Miss America Organization, the Literacy Volunteers Association, and Manna at the Shore. Shirley loved attending her granddaughters’ activities and volunteering in their schools through the Junior Great Books Program and the Mainland Regional High School After Prom Celebration. She also loved playing bridge and was a 60-year member of WNBC, the Wednesday Night Bridge Club. No one had a bigger heart than Shirley. Her legacy defined by kindness and human connection will live on in the memories of all those whose lives she touched.

Shirley was predeceased by her husband of 70 years, Seymour Gash. She is survived by her loving family including son, Larry Gash (Carla) of Ventnor, NJ; daughter, Maryann Glazier (Arny) of Newton, MA; daughter, Betsy Gash of Margate, NJ; granddaughters, Lindsay Gash Siersema (Reynold) of Evanston, Il; Adriane Gash Hoberman (Jeffrey) of Fanwood, NJ; Roxanne Glazier of Newton, MA; and great grandson Samuel David Hoberman.

Services and burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in Shirley’s memory be made to the Shirley Mae Breast Cancer Fund, PO Box 3265, Margate, NJ 08402 (www.shirleymaefund.org) or to Manna at the Shore, 2501 Shore Road, Northfield, NJ 08225 (www.mannashorenj.org).
