Obituary for Samuel A Gordesky
Samuel (Sol) Aaron Gordesky
July 27, 1921 to October 16, 2019
Samuel Aaron Gordesky, Somers Point, NJ at age 98 was known to family and friends as Sol. Born in Philadelphia, he was preceded in death by his wife Allene and his three older siblings Edward Gordy, Rita Chorney and Lillian Podell.
Sol was an avid tennis player and that’s an understatement. He continued to play until the age of 88 when he absolutely had to quit because he just couldn’t see the ball.
A consummate humanitarian, Sol often stepped in to help others who could not help themselves by showing them they could succeed. For example, he helped illiterate adults learn to read and assisted new Americans from many different countries find meaningful lives in the United States. Sol always held a special place in his heart for the State of Israel and after he retired from business, he served in the Israeli army through the Volunteers for Israel Program. He was a tireless advocate for equal justice, civil rights and for any issue which he saw as “just plain wrong.”
More often than not, he was drafted into leadership roles preferring to work diligently behind the scenes without fanfare. He loved Judaism and was an ardent supporter of a long list of Jewish causes throughout his life.
Sol will be missed by his two daughters Joan G. Kaufman and Susan Gordesky (aka Joanie & Susie), son-in-law Louis Hecht, Jr., his three grandchildren David Kaufman, Alexander Bruner, Katelyn Bruner, nieces and nephews and many friends. He will be lovingly remembered by his remarkable team of dedicated care givers and their families for the past three years.
The family asks that contributions in his memory may made to the ADL (Anti-Defamation League), Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem, or a charity of the donor's choice.
