Obituary for Lois Marchel

Print
Marchel, Lois A-87, of Margate, passed away on Friday, October 12, 2018. She was born in Atlantic City and raised in Ventnor, NJ by Harry and Florence Gaines. After graduating Atlantic City High School in 1949, she continued her studies at Syracuse University, graduating with a degree in Education. It was there where she met her future husband, Jack Marchel, to whom she was married for 62 years. Jack predeceased her in 2016. After settling in Margate, Jack and she began their life together. Lois became a teacher in the Ventnor School system and also taught in the Margate public schools. She was an incredible mother to her three children, Janet Weitz (Eric), Debbie Ferraid (Rick) and Steve Marchel. She was a loving grandmother to Cara Horner (Brandon), Lauren Husarik (Stephen), Spencer Marchel and Cameron Marchel. She is also survived by her four great-grandchildren and was predeceased by her brother, Norman Gaines. Lois’s life was notable for many reasons, not the least of which was her evolution from a sports neophyte to an expert fan, due to absolute devotion to Jack and his interests. Her unconditional love and support of all her family was her true legacy. Nothing was more cherished by her than time spent with her husband, children and their families. Lois was voracious reader and passed her love of learning on to her children. She also was an early activist in the US Civil Rights Movement and participated in a number of marches championing equality for all. She was a politics-junkie and even in her last days could be seen yelling at the TV, forcefully outraged at our current political climate. Lois loved living near the sea, frequently saying throughout her long life how fortunate we are to live among nature’s beauty. She leaves behind a legacy full of love, hope, support and a high-minded spirit for all which is fair. A Memorial Service to honor Lois’s life will be held at 11am, Tuesday, October 16 at ROTH-GOLDSTEINS’ MEMORIAL CHAPEL- 116 Pacific Avenue, Atlantic City. The family will be receiving friends at the Marchel home on Tuesday following the service. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Wetlands Institute 1075 Stone Harbor Blvd, Stone Harbor, NJ 08247 or Boys and Girls Club of Atlantic City 317 North Pennsylvania Ave, Atlantic City, NJ 08401.
