Obituary for Lenore B Slatkin

Lenore B. Slatkin, 87 of Atlantic City, NJ died on November 12, 2019. Born in Philadelphia, she moved to Atlantic City when she was 19 months old and lived all but 12 years of her life on Absecon Island. She went through the Atlantic City school system, graduated ACHS in 1950 and went on to Temple University, studying elementary education.

She married Marvin W. Slatkin and moved to Switzerland where they lived for six years, first in Fribourg and then in Lausanne. In Switzerland she studied porcelain painting, creating many beautiful pieces over the years. They moved to Brooklyn for four years where her husband did his internship, residency, and fellowship training and she took courses at Brooklyn College. When her husband established his medical practice in Ventnor, Lenore managed the office and subsequently trained all staff.

Lenore was a life long student and continued her love of learning over the years at ACC and Stockton as well as attending lectures locally on myriad subjects. She enjoyed taking classes in art, film, religion, history, and politics. Lenore was an active volunteer in our community serving in leadership roles on the boards of directors of many civic, communal, and religious organizations. For over six decades the impact of her work has strengthened the quality of life for children and adults in the community. She served with distinction as president of Women's Auxiliary to Medical Society of Atlantic County and over the years was Vice President of Programming of her Hadassah chapters, and FELS (Friends of Encore Learning at Stockton). She was instrumental in bringing outstanding speakers elevating the quality of organizations' programs.

Lenore was a member of Shirat Hayam (formerly Congregation Beth Judah) for over 55 years and served on both the synagogue and sisterhood boards as well as the Board of Jewish Education for Atlantic County. She brought leadership skills to both the Ventnor Community Association and the St. Leonard's Tract Association in Ventnor for over 40 years. She enjoyed serving as a volunteer with the Miss America Pageant and as a judge for many years with the Hydrangea Trail in South Jersey. Lenore was a life member of Hadassah, Jewish Women International, RNS Cancer and Heart Fund, and the Atlantic City Historical Museum.
With artistic appreciation and creativity she enjoyed antiquing, floral arranging, porcelain painting, needlepoint, knitting, and stamping as well as going to concerts, theater, and ballet. She and her husband traveled extensively. Most precious of all, she enjoyed time spent with family and old friends.

Lenore is predeceased by her beloved parents, Florence (Cantor) and Jack Burstein; her favorite uncle, Seymour Cantor; her loving husband of 48 years, Marvin W. Slatkin, M.D.; and her dear sister, Joyce Burstein Rhode. She is survived by her daughter, Susan (Jay) Finkelstein of Chevy Chase, Maryland and their children Jeffrey, Rachel, and Andrew; and her son, Seymour (Marsha) Slatkin of Potomac, Maryland and their children Allison (Matthew) and Robert.

Memorial donations may be made to Shirat Hayam, the Board of Jewish Education, or RNS Cancer & Heart Fund.
