Obituary for Judith K. "Judy" Altman

Judith (Judy) Altman, age 89, passed away peacefully on February 11, 2021 at the Bickford of Chesterfield, in Midlothian, VA, where she resided for the past several years. Judy was born and raised in Philadelphia, PA. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania with a degree in elementary education and taught in the Philadelphia public school system for many years. Judy and her husband, Ira who preceded her in death in 2005, shared 49 wonderful years together. They raised their family in Philadelphia and spent numerous wonderful summers at the shore in Margate, NJ. Judy loved reading, classical piano, challenging crossword puzzles and taking long walks. Above all, family and friends gave her the greatest pleasure.

Judy will be missed by many and is survived by her daughter and son-in law, Nancy and Curtis Hayes of Midlothian, VA, and her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Fran Altman of Wilmington, DE. Judy (known as Grammy to her grandchildren) is also survived by four grandchildren and their partners, Allison and Danny Singles of Exton, PA, Rebecca Hayes and Neal Freed of Richmond, VA, Amanda Hayes and Heather Barden of Richmond, VA, and Ben Altman and Yukari Yamahiro of New York, NY. Her grandchildren will always fondly remember all the time they spent together at “Camp Margate” with their Grammy and Pop-Pop. Judy was also lucky to get to know and love each of her grandchildren’s partners. Finally, Judy is survived by her five great-grandsons, Benjamin, Jack, Remy, Henry, and Howie, and loved every second she was able to spend with them.

The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation for the wonderful care she received from the dedicated and loving staff of the Bickford. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or to the PWA Endowed Scholarship Fund at the University of Pennsylvania.
