Obituary for Joyce Marilyn Kershenblatt (Shapiro)
Joyce Marilyn Kershenblatt, age 88, died peacefully on July 18, 2023, following a long battle with dementia. Joyce and her late husband, Dr. Alex Kershenblatt, who passed away in January 2023, were residents and members of the Hunters Run Country Club in Boynton Beach, FL for the past 20+ years, and previously resided in Margate and Ventnor, NJ.
Born in Philadelphia, Joyce attended South Philadelphia High School, and was a graduate of West Chester State Teachers College. Joyce taught elementary school at Cheltenham Elementary School before marrying and moving to South Jersey. After raising a family, Joyce became a residential real estate salesperson at Women’s Realty in Margate, NJ. Joyce loved helping people and was active in charitable endeavors, including serving as President of the Ruth Newman Shapiro (RNS) Cancer and Heart Fund from 1975 - 1977, raising money to provide facilities and equipment for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer in South Jersey. Throughout her life, Joyce was an avid reader, and loved playing mahjong, bridge, tennis, and golf. She was also passionate about growing Jersey tomatoes and playing Monopoly with her grandchildren when they were growing up.
Joyce is survived by her two sons, Alan Kersh of New York City and Charles Kershenblatt of Margate; her daughter-in-law Candice Kersh, and two grandchildren, Spencer, and Dillon Kersh. She is predeceased by her husband Dr. Alex Kershenblatt, her parents, Yetta and Joseph Shapiro, and her brother, Leonard Shapiro.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30AM on Sunday July 23rd at the Roth-Goldstein Memorial Chapel in Atlantic City. Burial will be at the Beth Kehillah Cemetery in Egg Harbor Township.
Donations may be made to Central Synagogue in New York City, Miami Jewish Health Foundation, or the charity of one's choice.
