Obituary for Joseph Linsk

Dr. Joseph Linsk passed away today, age 95, after a prolonged illness. He follows his beloved wife of 69 years, Doritt, who passed in October. They were high school sweethearts and knew each other for 80 years. Joe was a lifelong resident of Atlantic City, where he practiced medicine and raised his family. He is survived by his children Heidi, Alex, Cathy, and Richard, their spouses Tetje, Robert, and Dorit, by his nieces and nephews Leslie and Leigh Levin and Paul Shapiro and Jayne O’Connor, by his grandchildren Kate and William Wittels, Samantha and Isaac Linsk, and Noah and Ben Linsk, by his nephews Shaw Levin and Fielding Miller, and by his great grandchildren Maya and Daniel Fertig. The Linsk home was loving and welcoming, always full of family and friends. Joe and Doritt cared for everyone, providing a second home for the children of Doritt’s sisters, Ruth and Sheila, who died prematurely of cancer. They were world travelers, taking the family on many adventures, from a year in Sweden to family vacations in Italy, across Europe, the Caribbean, the Galapagos, Japan and fishing in Canada. Joe was an avid cook, exploring cuisines and amazing everyone with his creations. Joe had a rich interior life and nurtured his passion for literature. He often could be found in his den listening to Beethoven and reading - in many instances rereading – the classics. He was a published poet and a playwright. He had a joke for everyone. He was an unrepentant liberal, espousing his views in essays and letters to the editor. He gave to charities just about every day. Most of all he was a master clinician and pioneer who wrote two textbooks introducing Fine Needle Aspiration to American physicians. He cared for thousands of patients from Atlantic County and led the residency program at Atlantic City Hospital. Sadly, in recent years he lost many friends and colleagues. The greatest loss, of course, was his beloved Doritt. Our consolation is that they are together once again. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Ruth Newman Shapiro Cancer and Heart Fund, 3 South Newport Ave., Ventnor, NJ 08406.
