Obituary for Garrett "Gary" Scarpa

Garrett (Gary) A. Scarpa, 71, passed away peacefully on January 4, 2021 at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center due to Covid-19.

Born in Atlantic City and raised in Margate, Gary graduated from Atlantic City High School with the great Class of ’67. Gary graduated from Atlantic Community College, then went on to graduate with honors from Glassboro State College with a degree in Special Education. He also attended Fairleigh Dickenson University’s master’s program in Education. Gary taught in the Absecon School System, then joined the State of NJ Department of Labor in Pleasantville.

Gary was a member of Congregation Beth Israel where he proudly served as a member of the board and served on various committees. He was a Master Mason with Justice Lodge in Linwood where he was chairman of the scholarship committee. Gary organized blood drives there and other organizations of which he was a member.

Gary was caring, kind and compassionate, always thinking of others. He would help anyone who needed a guiding hand.

Gary had been married to the love of his life and best friend, Barbara (Weinstein) for over forty years. First residing in Ventnor, then moving to Northfield where they happily lived for thirty four years. Despite being afflicted with Muscular Dystrophy, Gary lived a full life. He never let anything stand in his way of doing whatever it was that he wanted to do. He was a devoted and loving husband and a good friend to all who had the privilege to know him. He loved reading about all aspects of history, historical figures and politics. He had incredible recall and could tell of the most minute details what he read or visited. Vacations always included stops where there was historic interest. He loved New York City, attending Broadway shows and browsing museums.

When his health began declining, Barbara was his caregiver until the time he required more help than she was able to provide. He then resided at Seacrest Village for several years before contracting Covid-19. He became so ill that he was hospitalized and passed away with Barbara by his side virtually. Gary is pre-deceased by his parents, Donald and Bernice Scarpa. He is survived by his love, Barbara, a sister, Mollie, brother, Dean, and his canine child, Izzie, as well as many lifelong friends.
