Carol Shapiro, March 24, 2021.

With deep sadness, we announce the death of Carol Shapiro, beloved daughter, sister, aunt, great-aunt and friend. Carol passed away of natural causes at her home in New York City. She was well-known as a wonderful therapist, and beloved for her zest for life and feisty nature.

Born in New York and having lived in Japan and Spain as a child and young adult, Carol loved travel, and was a voracious reader. Many of the professional organizations to which she belonged honored her service and philanthropy.

Carol is survived by her mother, Hannah Shapiro; her brother, Stanley Shapiro (JoAnn); her sister, Nancy; and many loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephew.

Relatives and friends are invited to funeral services on Tuesday, March 30, 2021 at 11:00AM at Beth El Synagogue, 500 N. Jerome Avenue, Margate. Interment will follow in Beth Kehillah Cemetery, Egg Harbor Township.

Contributions in Carol's memory can be made to the charity of the donor’s choice.

I just learned of Carol’s passing moments ago - and I’m so shocked and sad. Carol was my therapist for many, many years. I met her when I was a student at Antioch College in Baltimore in the early 1970’s. We exchanged Gestalt Therapy group sessions for video documention services. I videotaped her adult groups and her work with young differently abled kids. Then I went on to be in her groups and private sessions. We stopped seeing each other after many years. My experience with the hot seat work with Carol in Gestalt Therapy led me to theater and I went on to found a theater company in Washington DC. Then, when I moved to NYC I was dancing at B’nai Jesherun in a long line of people holding hands, I felt a hand holding mine with such positive eneregy, dancing joyfully next to me … I turned around that it was Carol! Now I have a one-person show “Que Será, Será: A Life’s Journey of Sexual Oriention & Gender Expression” that documents my life growing up Queer. One of the sections shows how Gestalt Therapy saved my life after an attmpted suicide. I’m still reeling from this news. I haven’t been in touch with Carol for many years but she helped me SO much, so many times. She was vivacious, fierce, joyful, creative. I love her and wish I could have attended services to honor her. My heart goes out to her family and everyone who was affected by her life.
