Obituary for Carol Gonick Rimm

Carol Gonick Rimm, age 83, passed comfortably and in her sleep on August 4, 2021.

A loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, friend, Carol was a longtime resident of Margate City, widow of former city commissioner Sigmund Rimm, and daughter of the late Morris and Bella Gonick of NYC. An avid knitter, Carol established Chicks with Sticks at the Martin Bloom Pavilion. She loved to cook, bake, garden, play Mah Jongg, cheat at Scrabble, Zoom with grandchildren all over the world, collect sea glass, and travel with her loving husband, Sig.

She graduated cum laude from Hunter College in New York City, where she later earned her master’s degree. She became a Bat Mitzvah as an adult, evidence of her belief in lifelong learning. She was committed to helping others achieve their goals and taught kindergarten in the Scarsdale NY School system; owned and operated Dover Country Day School in Toms River, NJ; and taught eighth grade social studies at Toms River NJ Intermediate School. Her volunteer activities included being active in Contact Atlantic of the Federation of Jewish Agencies, the Miss America Hostess Committee, co-chair of the Kids Fair for the JCC with husband, Sigmund Rimm; chair of the Anne Frank Exhibit at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey; President, Jewish Family Services; President, Jersey Shore Knitting Guild; co-chair of the Press Committee of the Miss America Scholarship Organization; volunteer for Manna at the Shore; volunteer for RNS Showhouse; and docent at the RNS Universal House.

Carol is survived by her four children: Carol Messing, Michael Rimm (Gabi Galler-Rimm), Eliot Graff (Lora Heiny) and Felicia "Lisa" Christensen (Neil); brother-in-law Alfred “Bucky,” Rimm (Sylvia “Simi”); his grandchildren: Ephraim Messing (Tali), Devorah Esses (Avi), Penina Claman (Zolly), Miriam Rackoff (Aaron), Adrian Rimm, Julian Rimm, Brian “Avery” Christensen, Stephen Christensen (Courtney Drake) and Rhys Sorenson-Graff and twelve great-grandchildren.

Carol’s motto was: “Perseverance wins.”

Her favorite sayings were:

“Don’t ever feel that you don’t make a difference.”

“The seeds you plant may bloom when you are no longer here.”

“God gave you eyes in the front of your head to look forward.”

“Always remember the past and learn from it.”

“I may not be right, but I’m never wrong.”

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you donate to the Parkinson’s Foundation (www.Parkinson.org) or your favorite charities. May you all find inspiration from her life and comfort in the days ahead.
