Obituary for Betty (Elizabeth) Chaikin (Schindler)

Chaikin, Betty (Elizabeth) – 97 of Linwood, NJ and formerly of Brigantine passed away on June 4, 2023 after a long, wonderful life. Betty was born in Overbrook PA and moved to Ventnor NJ before her senior year of high school. Betty graduated from Atlantic City High School and subsequently New York University where she majored in marketing. She and her husband, Dr Joseph Chaikin resided in Brigantine beginning in 1951. She assisted “Dr Joe” in his office in the early days of his practice. Betty was very involved in a variety of community social activities. Betty was one of the founding members of the Brigantine Jewish Community Center which later became Temple Beth Shalom and spent many hours participating in different functions for the synagogue. She was conferred the Woman of Valor Award for becoming the first woman president of the congregation. She was a member of the Golda Meir Chapter of Hadassah. Betty also volunteered at the Brigantine Historical Society and was part of the Brigantine knitting club. She was a local instructor of Mah Jong. In later years, Betty loved riding her tricycle around her Sea Point neighborhood and working on her garden. Betty Chaikin is survived by her son Dr. Harry Chaikin (Sarah) of Brigantine and their three children Katie (Ian) MacWilliams, Hannah Rizzo and Carolyn (Whitney) Duncan, and six great grandchildren Dutch, Calvin, Fiona, Logan, Drew and Zoey, her daughter Jamie Chaikin (Billy Boutin) of Somerset and their two children Otto (Natalia) and Scotty (Amanda) and grandson Parker, and daughter Gale (Steven) Donohue of Brigantine and their two children Allison (David) Landsman and Michael (Melissa) and their four great grandchildren Anthony, Brynley, Riley and Joseph. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the Graveside Services on Thursday, June 8th, 11:30 AM at Beth Kehillah cemetery, EHT. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Temple Beth Shalom, 4419 Brigantine Ave., Brigantine, NJ 08203.
