Obituary for Bernard J Ostrum

Bernard J. Ostrum passed away peacefully on July 25, 2018 just one month shy of his 87th birthday. Born and raised in Philadelphia, Bernie was a proud graduate of Central High School (190th class), graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 1952 and earned his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania in 1956. He completed his radiology residency at the Philadelphia General Hospital in 1960 under the tutelage of his father Dr. Herman W. Ostrum who was the chairman of radiology at PGH.

Dr. Ostrum started his career at Albert Einstein Medical Center Southern Division in 1960 and moved to Albert Einstein Northern Division in 1963. He was a radiologist in the department of radiology at Albert Einstein Medical Center from 1963 through 1992 serving as Chairman from 1976-1991. He was responsible for the training of hundreds of radiology residents over the years and was an innovative radiologist who helped develop film-screen mammography and was an early adopter of both CT and MRI technology.

During his career, Dr. Ostrum served as president of the Philadelphia Roentgen Ray Society and president of the Pennsylvania Radiological Society. He was also a fellow of the Philadelphia College of Physicians and the American College of Radiology.

Dr. Ostrum was predeceased by the love of his life, his wife of 49 years, Aileen (nee Brodsky). He is survived by his three children Linda Luyet (Jean Claude) of Verbier Switzerland, Dr. Robert Ostrum (Joan) of Chapel Hill North Carolina and Dr. Donald Ostrum (Karen) of Maple Glen, PA plus 6 grandsons and four great-grandchildren. His loss is also mourned by his girlfriend Sydne Hirsch who loved and supported him over the last 17 years of his life.
